Carafe & Tumbler

Viva is Kosta Boda’s first series of informal glasses for everyday contact. A small base table with a large area of use where the boundaries between the different parts are dissolved and traditional functions are combined in a new way.
The romantic echo from the glassworks‘ rich design history and the glass craftsmanship’s manufacturing traditions have inspired the series’ soft design language. The result is a very useful family glass on foot with accompanying carafe. The glass on foot with a wide cup can be used for red wine but even for beer or must. In the tall narrow glass on foot, white wine is served, but it also perfectly suits a red Bordeaux, a dessert wine or cava. The water glass has been given a functional foot as well, giving it a distinct character.
“The collaboration with Kosta Boda has meant a rediscovery of roots. As a child, I lived for a time in the Småland glass kingdom when my parents studied at the glass school in Orrefors. Memories, people, scents and colors have been etched from then on and have come to have a great significance for me becoming who I became.
Not surprisingly when starting to develop the ”Viva” range almost three years ago it was like switching on an amplifier bringing back these impressions when stepping through the factory doors in Kosta. In my design I instinctively came to search for the very same thing. I started to seek roots in Swedish glass making traditions and its techniques. Through that I came to work with enhancing the sensation and highlight the importance of craft in industrially manufactured objects. The result is a progressive but at the same time quite romantic, maybe even sentimental, design for everyday celebrations, with echoes from Simon Gate and Edward Hald, all gently overlooked by the divine spirit of Monica Backström. ” – Matti Klenell
